An Organic Ethiopian Coffee with Notes of Orange Blossom and Bergamot
The Homacho Waeno cooperative is a member of the Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union. Its farmers are located around Aleta Wondo district near the border between Sidama and Yirgacheffe. Farmer members deliver their fresh coffee cherries to one of the four washing stations the cooperative manages in the four woredas its spans: Bowadino, Harangicho, Homacho Waeno and Homacho Chawa.
Homacho is considered a model organization in SCFCU. During the 2019/2020 harvest Homacho Waeno was the only cooperative in Sidama Union that presented an increase in production compared to the last year, overtaking Fero as the largest volume exporting cooperative in SCFCU. The leadership of the organization attributes this increase to the success of continued training and development of members. The cooperative has been focusing on composting and fertilization for the last 10 years and has held regular workshops. Because of this training, members are seeing the importance of planting new trees and composting, resulting in increases in production.
Cooperatives in Sidama, including Homacho Waeno, designate “model farmers,” identified for their involvement in the organization and good production levels. Model farmers first participate in an initial workshop for any given subject, be it composting, pruning, selective harvesting, etc. Each model farmer is then responsible for replicating those same workshops in their community. Homacho Waeno has 200 model farmers, and through them have managed to train over 3000 members on composting practices. Homacho Waeno also prepares compost with cherry pulp in each of its four washing stations.
The Bottom Line:
This Ethiopia Trekker Series offering from the Homacho Waeno Cooperative in Sidama has the classic profile that Ethiopias are famous for. Lemon, brown Sugar and orange blossom in the aroma give way to more orange Blossom and bergamot in the cup. This coffee is for anyone who is a fan of floral, complex and delicate coffees.
Thanks to our friends at Cooperative Coffees for helping us share the story of our friends at Homacho Waeno.
