Premium Lot from Karla Portillo

Each year, the coffee producer cooperative COMSA in Marcala, Honduras meticulously organizes a premium lot program to showcase their individual farmers. These lots are limited, experimental and unique. Karla Portillo’s Honduras premium lot from her farm, Finca Palenta Verde is one of the tastiest lots we have had from COMSA’s program. With tasting notes of  Raisin, Hazelnut and Caramel, this fair trade and organic certified trekker series coffee from Honduras is a standout in our lineup.

Karla Portillo is a third generation coffee farmer, and the accumulated experience of generations is manifested in the quality of the coffee. The family considers coffee growing to be very rewarding. It was not until the 2016-2017 harvest that Karla, with guidance from COMSA, began to work with specialty coffees, specializing  in the production of honey and natural coffees. This particular lot, is produced using the traditional washed process. This leads to more familiar flavors, while the attention to detail  rounds out an excellent cup.

The Bottom Line

Karla’s current offering from Finca (estate or farm) Palenta Verde deep in the Honduras coffee lands is a balanced, syrupy premium lot  which tastes of raisin, hazelnut and caramel. This Amavida Coffee Roasters  Trekker Series Coffee  hints at the flavors of fall just ahead of us.  We hope you’ll enjoy and share it!

Thanks to fellow B Corp Cooperative Coffees  and COMSA for helping us share the story of our friend Karla Portillo.
