First of It’s Kind, Honey Process Papua New Guinea Coffee

The team at Amavida Coffee Roasters is thrilled to offer of our first honey processed Papua New Guinea coffee. This unique offering is from Baroida Estate, a remote coffee plantation located in the Jabara Mountains of the country’s Eastern Highlands region. The Lamari River Valley and Mount Jabara feature thousands of hectares of former colonial coffee estates as well as the plots of many smallholder coffee producers.

Baroida Estate is a 220 hectare plantation with close to one million trees and is one of the last true single-estate plantation coffees in Papua New Guinea. Baroida Estate was founded by Ben Colbran in the 1960s when early settlers to the region began looking at coffee as a long-term sustainable crop.

These days, Baroida Estate is being run by the son and grandson of its founder and much of the region’s coffee comes through Baroida Estate for processing and exportation. Baroida Estate produces around 200 tons of Papua New Guinea coffee each harvest and has been involved in efforts to improve the region’s infrastructure by building roads, schools, and bridges. Interestingly, the estate’s twenty six plots of coffee plants are GPS mapped and both the tree varieties for each plot and the day’s production are tracked.
