High Altitudes and Attention to Detail Make an Outstanding Organic Guatemala Coffee

This premium lot comes to us from our long time producer partner Manos Campesinas. Manos Campesinas is an organization of small-scale coffee producers in the highlands of southwestern Guatemala. The organization was legally formed in 1997, at which time it was comprised of 620 farmers organized in six cooperatives. Today, it brings together 1,200 members organized in eight cooperatives located in the Departments of San Marcos, Quetzaltenango, Retalhuleu and Solola.

Over the past few years, Manos Campesinas has been developing its quality control capacity in order to classify quality they receive from the member associations more effectively, and offer special coffees to customers. Manos Campesinas has also been expanding membership in the areas in the north of the department of San Marcos, neighboring the border with Huehuetenango.

Coffees from the north of San Marcos are known to be significantly higher in altitude and a denser bean. The increased bean density and prolonged ripening at higher altitudes leads to a more complex, distinct flavor profile in this special lot. We have found that this particular lot is a stand out from previous coffees from Manos Campesinas.

The Bottom Line:

We are really enjoying this coffee’s versatility and approachability. Apricot and nougat in the aroma give way to brown sugar, apricot and peach in the cup. This coffee works particularly well in cold brew, and we have featured it as such in our cafes over the past few months.

Thank you to Cooperative Coffees for helping us source and share the story of this coffee's producers at Manos Campesinas.
