The Orgánica cooperative is composed of a tightly knit group of 104 friends and neighbors, organized into 13 groups spanning over 60 hectares of certified production across four towns. Each group is considered an “experience exchange and quality control group” that convenes periodically to discuss matters of production and quality control. The internal control system for their organic production is conducted by these groups. Members meet regularly, holding a general assembly every quarter to discuss different aspects of their business. Four common denominators join the members of Orgánica: unity, a commitment to transparency, commitment to democracy and commitment to quality and hold two main priorities: 1) to improve the quality of life for the families 2) to improve the quality of the coffee.

The Orgánica Association has been planting new high-quality varieties over the last few years as a means to diversify production and increase cup quality and producer incomes across their membership. Since Cooperative Coffees’ first visits to the organization, there have been discussions of the possibility of buying these special coffees. Since some of these new varieties are still very young in age, overall production levels are still very low. Farmers were only able to submit a few kilograms of parchment coffee of each variety. Given the small availability, Orgánica had to blend these instead of managing them as variety specific microlots.

The Bottom Line:

This is a unique, elegant reserve series offering from Cauca in southern Colombia. The aromatics on this coffee really are special, and there is a floral characteristic to this lot that we are sure you will love. This coffee is for anyone who is interested in trying unique varieties of coffee like Maragogype, Gesha, Bourbon and Tabi.

Thank you to our friends at Cooperative Coffees for helping us tell the story of Organica and source their exceptional coffee!
