Kanyege’s First Honey Processed Coffee

Tucked away in the high-altitude hills of Rwanda’s Nyamasheke District, Kanyege Central Washing Station is responsible for producing some of the country’s best coffee. Smallholders from this region are growing primarily older Bourbon cultivars, and some of the farms are more than 2000 meters above sea level. While this region has produced successful washed and natural coffees in the past, 2019 marked the first crop year in which Kanyege also used the honey-processing method.

Despite the country’s tumultuous history, the resilience of the Rwandan people is evident in the reemergence of their coffee industry. Rwanda is now one of the most stable countries in the region, and coffee production has played a key role in its economic growth and stability. Poor weather and affected growing conditions resulted in a 40% decrease in production in late 2017, but the farmers of the Nyamasheke District have been able to recover and continue producing coffee of exceptional quality.

The Bottom Line

Fans of honey-processed coffees will enjoy this new limited release offering from Kanyege CWS in Rwanda. Like other coffees that are processed using the honey method, our honey process Rwanda coffee from Kanyege features a complex variety of fruit flavors while maintaining a balanced acidity. Peach, strawberry, and molasses flavors abound in this one. Get it while you can, and be sure to check out our other single origin coffee offerings.
